Life is unfair and comes in different shades with variety of
challenges, swings, etc. The level, degree or extent of occurrence may also
differ. The crux however is our attitude and how we respond to such swings and
challenges. Choice is one of the great gifts bestowed upon humanity. We can
therefore choose to either react or respond. In essence, you can choose to “Happen to Life” (respond) or allow
life to happen to you (react).
Choosing to “Happen to
Life” requires being proactive, responsive, strategic in reasoning,
planning, positive, informed in making decisions, identify issues and taking
steps to either prevent or remediate. Even when such issues/challenges occur
unexpectedly, critical analysis of such events are done, options are weighed
while the pros and cons of such options are identified before taking the best
option as a corrective measure to prevent a re-occurrence. They are able to a
great extent determine their future.
On the reverse, those that allow life to happen to them are
reactionary and the opposite of the former, do more of damage control rather
than prevention, “crash program., etc. Also, because of the urgency and need
for action, such actions are usually not well thought and made on impulse
leading more negative situations. This group of people get tossed and move with
wind, opened to various vagaries of life. Even when challenges are identified
early, procrastination, inaction and indecision sets in.
Which group do you belong to, those that happen to life or
those that allow life to happen to them? I was in the latter group, not
bothering to look beyond the immediate, believing nothing bad can happen to me
of ask the “what if” question until I was jolted back to reality with no solid
plan, resulting to different permutations, trial and errors and busy blaming
others for my stupidity.
The good news is that you can choose to change sides and take
your destiny into your hands, “happen to
life”. You can still get back up as it does not matter how many times you
fall. What counts is your determination to get back up each time but most
importantly identify and imbibe the lessons learnt from such experiences.
Whether in business or individual life, try and try again
until you succeed. Conceive it, believe
it and achieve it!
God bless!
